Shaler American Legion, Post 785 has been a very active and effective force in supporting Shaler Township residents. 

 

The following programs were supported repeatedly by Post 785 over the last 60 years to help Township residents:

 

Scholarship Program – for graduates of local high schools, mainly Shaler Area;  $7,000.00 per year has been awarded.

Shaler American Legion Baseball Team – for Shaler athletes during Spring and Summer.

Christmas Food Certificates – distributed through local Churches for needy families.

Americanism Awards – to graduating 8th grade boys and girls at three local Grade Schools who best display the attributes of Americanism.  The award consists of a medallion and certificate to the winners and engraved  plaques for the Schools.

Shaler Libraries –  cash and book/magazine subscription donations.

Sports Programs, Shaler Area High School and Other – donations are made generally in the form of sports program advertisements.

Shaler EMS and Undercliff VFC – annual donations.

Shaler Township Memorial Day Program -   together with VFW Post 9199, Post 785 organizes and participates in this annual Service at Mount Royal Cemetery,

 

In addition, there are other American Legion Programs that Post 785 supports that have included Shaler Township and Allegheny County participants:

 

Keystone Boys State and State Police Youth Week -  these week-long programs held at PA educational institutions indoctrinate youth in government organization and operations.  Post 785 sponsors several youths to one or both programs each year.

Allegheny County Youth Achievement Dinner -  recognizes outstanding youth in the county and has included several Shaler young people.

Veterans Hospital Bingo Parties -  for handicapped/hospitalized veterans.

Annual Memorial Day Program -  conduct parade and/or service at Mt. Royal Cemetery.

 

In summary, over $15,000.00 is spent by Post 785 in programs to assist Shaler Township residents each year.  Post 785 also provided to the Township a monument at Shaw Place along Mt. Royal Blvd. (near the Library) commemorating the deceased that served their country in the Armed Forces.
